Habba Kadal: Life after Kashmir sex scandal

Srinagar
July 25, 2006:

This locality in Srinagar is paying a subtle price for the unearthed Kashmir sex scandal that involved top bureaucrats, police officials and politicians of the state. Habba Kadal in Srinagar got a bad name as the alleged king pin of the unearthed sex scandal, Sabina lived in this locality. With property prices falling and match making into the locality avoided, residents hope the damage is temporary. Shahnawaz Khan reports.

A four storied house near the Habba Kadal bridge sneers back at queer scornful looks of the passers by. This house belongs to Sabina, the alleged kingpin of the sex scandal . An angry mob attacked Sabina’s house and tried to raze it to ground while she was in detention after the scandal came into limelight.

The house, where for years, Sabina has allegedly been running a brothel, and coercing gullible girls into flesh trade haunts the residents and passers by even today. According to some residents the house has cast an ugly shadow all over the locality.

"She (Sabeena) has brought a bad name to our locality and nobody can deny it. Although we know that she was not a permanent resident of Habbakadal and had brought a house here, but for people outside Habakaddal she is a resident of this locality." says Haji Abdul Salam, a shopkeeper.

"A single sinner sinks the boat. So we all have to bear with it till things get calmer.” He adds

Residents says attending social functions is no longer a joy for them. “We have to face embarrassment once we say we belong to Habba Kadal at social functions or meetings.” Says Firdous Ahmad, a young businessman from the locality. . .
