This was one of the most high profile functions of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court. Apart from the President of India eminent jurists from all over India attended. The diamond jubilee celebrations of Jammu and Kashmir High court were however boycotted by lawyers in Kashmir as the Kashmir High Court Bar Association stayed away. Shahnawaz Khan reports.
As the Jammu and Kashmir High court celebrated its diamond jubilee the Kashmir High Court Bar Association boycotted the celebrations. The Bar Association said, it protests the alleged human rights violations by armed forced in Jammu and Kashmir and wants a final settlement of Kashmir dispute. Besides the Bar Association called the celebrations ‘politically motivated’.
“The diamond jubilee celebrations are politically motivated; this is just to give an impression to the outside world that everything is fine in Kashmir, when the ground reality is contrary.” Says Mian Qayoom, President of the Kashmir High Court Bar Association, referring to the alleged human rights violations by armed forces in Kashmir.
“It is our duty to highlight the hidden addenda of the organisers of these celebrations” says Mohammed Amin Bhat, executive member of the Bar Association.
“The world leaders should know that normalcy is the real causality in Jammu and Kashmir and that they are sitting on a volcano that can erupt any time, if they do not resort to amicable, peaceful and final settlement of Jammu and Kashmir” Bhat says.
Established in 1928, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court completed 75 years in 2003. The diamond jubilee was celebrated three years after it was due.
“In 2003 the then chief justice declined to hold celebrations, citing the situation in Kashmir. Now what makes them celebrate it with so much of pomp and show, and why they are bringing so many people? What is there to celebrate”? Qayoom questions.
“There are thousands of Habeas Corpus petitions pending in the court. In cases where the court has passed any directive the executive has not implemented. So what is there to celebrate” he adds. . . .
