Hi-tech theft at Kashmir ATM

Srinagar, November 20, 2007:

Hi tech crime
Hi tech crime
In a digital crime, first of its kind in Kashmir, thieves ran way with 1.4 million rupees (INR) from an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) of J&K Bank in Srinagar, summer capital of Indian administered Kashmir, Tuesday morning.

The thieves apparently broke the 12-digit-code of the ATM situated in the heart of the city, and decamped with the cash.

Police officials told Kashmir Newz that either the thieves knew the 12-digit code or they broke it.

“The 12 digit-code is generally known to only two employees of the bank. Each of them has knowledge of six digits only,” Pevez Ahmad a police official in Srinagar said.

Preliminary investigations suggested the theft had occurred at around 6am local time. The ATM had not been damaged.

The theft was reported to police after bank officials found the ATM lock open.

Bank officials refused to comment on the matter.
