NC facilitated killings of Kashmir politicians: Mehbooba

Mehbooba Mufti, the president of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the ruling ally in Indian administered Kashmir, here Sunday accused opposition National Conference (NC) of facilitating the assassinations of former separatist Abdul Gani Lone and its own ministers.

She was reacting to the recent statement of NC patron and former chief minister Farooq Abdullah at a gathering in Nagrota town of Muslim majority Indian administered Kashmir’s Hindu majority Jammu region.

The pro-Indian politician Mufti who is also the member of Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian bicameral parliament said that NC despite forewarnings facilitated the assassination of senior separatist Abdul Gani Lone and also their own ministers Mushtaq Ahmad Lone and Ghulam Hassan Bhat besides thousands of people.

Mufti said that out of frustration, the NC leaders were now trying to politicise for their electoral gains the tragic assassination of Kashmir’s former head priest Mirwaiz Moulvi Muhammad Farooq.

“People are the best judges and they have already written-off Farooq Abdullah as one of the misfortunes imposed on the region to push it into the most tragic era of death and destruction,” she said.

Referring to the infamous 1987 assembly elections in Kashmir, Mufti said, "The worst-ever electoral rigging engineered by the NC in 1987 elections is still haunting its leaders and foreseeing the party's dwindling political fate, the NC leaders have now started seeing in PDP the reincarnation of the erstwhile Muslim United Front (MUF)."

Abdullah, a diehard pro-Indian politician, had accused PDP of being the original MUF, which he is accused of defeating in the 1987 assembly polls by rigging with the tacit support of New Delhi.

"The NC leaders know that the massive rigging of 1987 elections by them led to a trail of death and destruction in the State and the people would punish them for their misdeeds," she said.

The PDP president said that Abdullah, who was today blaming his father and PDP patron Mufti Muhammad Sayeed for forcing the rightwing Jagmohan as Governor on the State, was the first to admire him as a "father, philosopher and a guide".

"Abdullah had then said that given the impressive work done by Jagmohan during his first term, he (Jagmohan) is more popular than any political leader in the State," she said.

Referring to the NC patron's recent histrionics against New Delhi, Mufti said it is a welcome realisation for Abdullah that power lies with the people of the State. "Previously it was ingrained in the former chief minister's mind that power could flow only from Delhi," she said.
