Gunmen rob people in south Kashmir
Mohammed Mohsen
Srinagar, February 20, 2008:
Unidentified gunmen stopped people in Bijbehara town in Indian administered Kashmir Tuesday and decamped with their money, residents alleged.
Eyewitnesses said that a group of four men stopped people going for morning prayers to a mosque Tuesday and looted cash from them.
The gunmen also entered some houses and decamped with money.
The incident created panic in the entire locality and residents blame police for rise in crime.
A delegation of residents told Kashmir Newz that despite approaching the local police station, no concrete assurances from the officials were received.
"We went to the local police station with the plea to get matter thoroughly investigated but there officials seemed to be totally unconcerned," the residents said.
The past months have witnessed a surge in burglary incidents across the town.
People relate the rise in burglary to “growing” drug abuse in the area which they allege is going on with the patronage of police officials.
People are demanding intensified night patrols by police and speedy investigations into criminal activities.
Sub Divisional Police Officer, Bijbehara, Shaffat Hussain told Kashmir Newz that he will look into the matter.
Meanwhile people of Nowhatta locality in summer capital Srinagar staged protests Tuesday against police for its failure to stop burglaries in the area.
The traders, shopkeepers and residents of the area took to streets at Nowhatta Chowk and chanted slogans against police and local administration.
