India says violence in Kashmir decreasing
February 27, 2008:
India said Wednesday that there has been a decrease in violence in its controlled portion of Jammu and Kashmir.
Replying to a question in Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian bicameral parliament, Minister of State for Home Affairs, Sriprakash Jaiswal said that the number of insurgency related incidents has decreased during the last two years.
In 2006, he said 1667 insurgency related incidents took place while in 2007, the number of such incidents was 1092.
India is engaged in peace process with Pakistan, like India claims the whole of Jammu and Kashmir as its territory and controls one of the portions.
An anti-India armed insurgency broke out in Indian administered Kashmir in 1989, with popular calls for right to self determination.
Indian blames Pakistan for aiding the insurgents, a charge Pakistan denies.
Meanwhile India’s defence minister, A K Antony, in reply to another question informed the Rajya Sabha that the “present situation in Pakistan will have no impact on the infiltration levels in Jammu and Kashmir”.
“Although no deluge of terrorists from across is expected, some form of uncalibrated and uncontrolled infiltration can be expected to ease out pressure from within Pakistan,” Antony said.
