Students accuse Kashmir University of cheating

The undergraduate Commerce students of University of Kashmir have accused the varsity of marring their careers by "changing the examination rules discreetly".

A group of students pursuing Bachelors of Commerce (B.Com) from the university staged a protest at the Press Colony in Srinagar raising slogans against the university authorities.

The agitated students alleged that the university issued an order on August 28, 2007, changing the rules for qualifying the examination.

"Earlier if we got 54 marks in aggregate from Paper A and Paper B, we were declared qualified," said Fayaz Ahmad, a student from Gandhi Memorial College in Srinagar.

"Now they have made it mandatory that one has to get 27 marks each in Paper A and Paper B, otherwise you will be deemed as fail," Ahmad said.

The students said that they had no problems with the new system too, had the notification been issued at the commencement of a new session.

"They passed the order in August, which is the fag end of session, and above all they didn't notify anybody regarding it," said Rubeena, another student.

The students also questioned the logic of excluding private examination from the new rules.

They claimed that even college authorities too were unaware of the new rules.

"I talked to my Head of Department and Principal and all of them expressed ignorance of such a notification," said Shabir Ahmad.

Most of the students, who have failed under the new rules have scored lesser in one of the two papers.

"I have got 20 marks in Paper A and 40 marks in Paper B. Despite getting aggregate of 60 marks I am declared fail according to this new law," said another student.

Around 500 such students have been affected by the new law.

The students accuse KU of having ruined one year of their career.
