TV journalist manhandled in South Kashmir

Srinagar, March 10, 2008:

A television journalist in south Kashmir's Shopian district was manhandled Monday by relative of a local MLA Ghulam Hassan Khan.

The journalist namely Bilal Khan working as reporter for Hyderabad based television channel ETV was heckled by Arshid Khan while he was discharging his professional duties.

Khan's nephew heckled the reporter in full public gaze and threatened to kill him.

"I was covering the taxi drivers' protest and Khan's nephew was insisting that I should go to MLA's house to do an interview of the MLA. When I tried to convince him that I have to ask my office first, he abused me and thrashed me," Bilal Khan said.

South Kashmir Journalist Association has condemned the assault on Bilal Khan and termed the act as an effort to muzzle the press.

Meanwhile a complaint has been lodged in this regard at police station Shopian against the incident.

Ghulam Hassan Khan got elected as MLA from the area on PDP mandate in 2002. However the party sacked him after his name came in the sexual exploitation case in Kashmir.

Many politicians and bureaucrats were accused to be involved in the sexual exploitation case. Ghulam Hassan Khan was one of them.
