Kashmir to have aquarium on Dal lake
Srinagar, March 12, 2008:
To woo tourists to the violence-hit Indian administered Kashmir, the regions government is planning to set up a major aquarium on the banks of world famous Dal lake.
The aquarium will be located on the banks Dal Lake in the foothills of Zabarwan mountain range at Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian administered Kashmir.
The aquarium will have a 200 meter long tunnel with aqua caves and house about 200 species of ornamental fish, a government official said.
It will be a centrally heated building to withstand extreme low temperature during the harsh Kashmir winter.
It will be the second major aquarium in Indian administered Kashmir.
The first one had come up at the Bagh-e-Bahu in Jammu, the winter capital.
The aquarium at Jammu draws thousands of enthusiastic visitors daily.
The Chief Minister of Indian administered Kashmir Ghulam Nabi Azad who visited the site where the new aquarium would be set up said, “The aquarium will add to the tourist attractions in the summer capital.”
The tourism industry in Kashmir suffered heavily after the outbreak of anti-India insurgency.
A Disturbed Areas Act imposed by New Delhi in Kashmir acts as a major hurdle for the foreign tourists to visit Kashmir.
The number of foreign tourists visiting the region has dwindled ever since late eighties soon after guns started rattling in the region.
