Seven Indian Armymen killed under avalanche in Kashmir
Srinagar, April 11, 2009:
At least seven Indian troopers were killed when an avalanche hit an Indian army post in Shamsabari mountain range in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
Indian Army spokesman Lt Col J S Brar told Kashmir Newz that seven Indian troopers were killed Tuesday morning when they came under an avalanche in Shamsabari mountain range, around 130 km north of Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian administered Kashmir.
Brar said 15 Indian troopers had come under the avalanche.
“Eight of these troopers have been rescued,” he said.
The eight survivors have been provided medical aid and their condition is stated as stable.
Kashmir has a rugged terrain and landslides and avalanches are often triggered from its mountains during frequent rains and heavy snow the region receives.
Brar said Indian troopers who came under the avalanche were manning a counter-insurgency post.
He said troopers posted there were preventing the entry of suspected militants from across the Line of Control, the de facto border which divides Kashmir between Indian administered and Pakistan administered parts.
Seventeen suspected militants and eight Indian troopers were killed last month in Shamsbari and Hafhruda forest range in one of the longest gun battle in recent years.
